Learn more about what I do

Welcome

The policies on this website apply to employees of the Oxnard Fire Department and are effective per the contractual agreement between Dr. Ryan Sharma and the City of Oxnard.

The management at the Oxnard Fire Department (OFD) has a strong interest in protecting the mental health of firefighters. This is demonstrated by their implementation of many preventative, support, and treatment services that recognize the natural stress that comes with the hard work of fire service.

The services that I provide to you are part of this effort by the OFD; they are designed to be of no cost to you so that there are fewer barriers to maintaining your health. The services available to you under my care include phone consultations, individual assessment and psychotherapy, and referral services. As described on my main website, I am trained in evidence-based practices that have been found to be helpful for many different issues, including those that may be trauma related.

My Relationship with the Oxnard Fire Department

In addition to clinical services, I am contracted with OFD to provide ongoing training and supervision to the Peer Support Team, periodically attend general OFD trainings, and respond in-person to disaster scenes or to the fire station after particularly difficult calls (when I am available and invited). I may also continue to go on ride alongs as part of my continued involvement with OFD.

Your Privacy

Your services with me are completely confidential. Neither the City of Oxnard nor the Oxnard Fire Department have access to your records or any other information about your services without your expressed permission, including whether or not you are even receiving services. Similarly, if a Peer Support member referred you, I do not discuss anything about you with them, even whether or not you called me or entered treatment. I will treat with great care all the information you share with me. It is your legal right that our sessions and my records about you be kept private. In all but a few rare situations, your confidentiality (that is, your privacy) is protected by federal and state laws and by the rules of my profession.

Some Situations Where I May Not Be a Good Fit For You

I may not be the best option for you if you have a condition that requires a high level of treatment.  This is sometimes the case for people struggling with severe alcohol or drug use where they may need closer monitoring.  I may also not be able to help you if your issue specifically involves another firefighter at OFD, such as an interpersonal conflict.  Because I am available to all members who may need assistance, this would create a conflict of interest should they also seek services.

Please reach out and schedule a no-cost, no-obligation phone consultation.
